Privacy Policy for Simple Tasks

This Privacy Policy describes how the Simple Tasks mobile application ("the App," "we," "us") handles information when you use it. Simple Tasks is developed by osdev.

Overview

Simple Tasks is designed to work fully offline by default. Your tasks, notes, folders, and custom fields stay on your device unless you deliberately turn on one of the optional features below (ads support the free app, and Google Drive / iCloud sync is opt-in). We do not operate our own servers and do not, ourselves, collect or have access to your task data.

Information We Collect

We do not collect any personal information ourselves, and the App does not require or offer any account, login, or user profile. Two features work through third parties, described fully below:

  • Advertising. The App shows ads via Google AdMob to support free use of the App.
  • Optional cloud sync. If you choose to turn it on, the App can back up your data to a Google Drive or iCloud account that belongs to you.

Outside of those two, opt-in-or-ad-related cases, we do not track your activity, location, or app usage.

How Your Data Is Stored

By default, all data you create in the App — tasks, notes, folders, custom fields, and app settings — is stored locally on your device only, using standard on-device storage, and is never transmitted anywhere by the App. This remains true unless you turn on Sync (below).

Advertising

The App uses Google AdMob to show ads. AdMob may collect and use device and advertising identifiers, general location (such as country or region), and app usage data to serve and measure ads, including personalized ads where permitted. On iOS, the App asks for App Tracking Transparency permission before requesting a personalized-ads identifier; you can allow or deny this, and can change your choice later in your device's Settings. On Android, the App follows Google's EEA/UK consent requirements where applicable. Google's own handling of this data is governed by Google's Privacy Policy and, for ads specifically, Google's Ad Privacy Formats terms — we don't receive your task data as part of this, only the App's ad-related integration does.

Optional Sync: Google Drive and iCloud

Sync is off by default. If you turn it on in Settings:

  • You connect your own Google Drive or iCloud account — the App does not have its own server, and we never receive a copy of your data.
  • The App stores a single backup file in a private, app-only area of that account (Google Drive's "app data" folder, or the App's own iCloud container) — not in a place you'd browse in the regular Drive or iCloud Files app.
  • That backup contains the same tasks, folders, fields, and settings the manual Export feature (below) already includes.
  • You can optionally turn on encryption before your first sync. With encryption on, your backup is encrypted on your device, using a passphrase only you know, before it's uploaded — we never see this passphrase, and it is never itself stored in the backup or sent anywhere. If you forget it, the backup cannot be recovered by us or anyone else; that's an inherent trade-off of on-device encryption, not a bug.
  • Once your data reaches Google Drive or iCloud, it's subject to that provider's own privacy policy and security practices, not ours: Google's Privacy Policy or Apple's Privacy Policy, depending which you connect.
  • You can disconnect a provider at any time from Settings. Disconnecting stops future syncs but does not delete the backup already sitting in your Google Drive/iCloud account — you can remove that yourself through Google's or Apple's own account-management tools if you'd like.

Backup, Export, and Import (Manual, File-Based)

The App also includes an Export feature that lets you save all of your data as a single JSON file, and an Import feature that lets you load a previously exported file back in. These remain entirely user-initiated and separate from Sync above:

  • When you export, you choose where the file is saved using your device's own file picker.
  • When you import, you choose which file to read using the same file picker.
  • We do not receive a copy of this file, and it is never uploaded anywhere by the App itself. What you do with the exported file afterward (for example, backing it up to your own cloud storage yourself) is entirely up to you and is governed by that service's own privacy policy, not ours.

Internet Permission

The App requests the Internet permission for: downloading and caching the "Inter" typeface the first time the App runs; serving ads through Google AdMob; and, only if you turn it on, syncing your backup to your connected Google Drive or iCloud account. None of these send your task data anywhere except the sync case, and only once you've deliberately turned that on.

Third-Party Services

Simple Tasks integrates Google AdMob (advertising) and Google Fonts (the Inter typeface). If you turn Sync on, it also integrates Google Sign-In and Google Drive, or Apple iCloud, depending which you choose to connect. No other third-party advertising, analytics, or data-sharing services are integrated.

Children's Privacy

Simple Tasks is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, regardless of age; ad personalization and sync are subject to the same age-appropriate protections Google and Apple require of apps on their platforms.

Data Deletion

You are always in control of your data. You can delete any task, folder, or field directly within the App (including permanently, via the Trash), disconnect Sync at any time, or remove all App data at once by uninstalling the App or clearing its storage from your device settings. Uninstalling does not delete a backup already stored in your own Google Drive or iCloud account — see the Sync section above for how to remove that yourself.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example to reflect new features. Changes will be posted at this same location with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
